After a whirlwind arrival at the Etihad in January, Abdukodir Khusanov seemed like he was set to become a key piece in Pep Guardiola’s 2025 puzzle. The 21-year-old defender, who made the switch from RC Lens in a big-money deal, impressed with some eye-catching displays against European heavyweights like Real Madrid, Liverpool, and Spurs.
But fast-forward a few weeks, and Khusanov has quietly slipped out of the starting XI. City fans have been wondering: what’s going on?
While some started speculating that something behind the scenes might be at play, a respected voice from Uzbekistan has set the record straight.
Speaking on social media, journalist Davron Fayziev clarified the situation:
“Let me be clear – there’s no issue between Khusanov and Pep. Guardiola still gives him attention during training, guiding him tactically. His performance levels haven’t dropped, and physically he’s in great shape.”
So, if it’s not fitness or form, what’s the reason? According to Fayziev, it’s all about competition – the kind of problem every top club loves to have. Nico O’Reilly’s recent breakout on the left has reshuffled the back line, with Joško Gvardiol slotting into the centre and Rúben Dias holding things down as usual.
“City are on a winning streak,” Fayziev added. “And most managers, especially Pep, won’t touch a defence that’s performing well.”
That puts things into perspective. It’s not a fall from favour – just a classic case of City’s incredible squad depth doing its thing. And let’s not forget: Khusanov is only 21. His time will come, and when it does, expect him to grab the opportunity like he did against the European giants earlier this season.
For now, he remains a top talent waiting in the wings – and there’s no doubt Pep has big plans for him.
