Pep Asserts his Authority As Bernardo Named New Skipper

Bernardo Silva will captain Manchester City against Wydad Casablanca after Pep Guardiola named him as Kevin De Bruyne’s successor — a decision made without the usual squad vote.
Guardiola confirmed there’d be no ballot this time. Instead, he chose Silva himself, pointing to the midfielder’s consistency, leadership and quiet authority.
“This is the first time I’ve done this,” Guardiola told Sky Sports’ Kaveh Solhekol. “I didn’t like how things went last year. This time, I’ve taken the decision. Sometimes I need to remind them who’s in charge.”
Guardiola described the role of captain as both simple and demanding.
“You put the team, your teammates, the club — everything — ahead of yourself. Do that, and you won’t go wrong. Bernardo understands that. He’s shown it time and again.”
Silva is entering the final year of his City contract, but Guardiola didn’t hesitate to place trust in a player he’s leaned on for nearly a decade.
“Bernardo’s been with us nine years. Barely missed a match. No dramas. When things turn, he steps up. Speaks when it matters. Never for show. Always for the good of the team.”
Joining him in the leadership group are Ruben Dias, Rodri and Erling Haaland — a spine of strength and experience, but this time with Bernardo at the front.
