Gonzalez Set to Stay Despite Transfer Speculation
Nico Gonzalez will remain part of City's squad for the upcoming campaign, contrary to mounting speculation about his departure from the Etihad.
The Spanish midfielder, who arrived from Porto in a £50m January deal, made 16 appearances across all competitions during his debut season. His primary role was covering for the injured Rodri, though his impact proved limited.
Questions about Gonzalez's long-term prospects intensified after he managed just 61 minutes during City's Club World Cup campaign in America. The tournament highlighted his position in Guardiola's pecking order, particularly following Rodri's return to the side.
Pep Guardiola has made no secret of wanting to streamline his squad. Yet sources close to the club suggest Gonzalez faces no greater risk of departure than any other player currently on the books.
That said, no exit has been completely dismissed. Every player carries a price tag, and City would consider serious offers should they materialise alongside the player's desire to move.
Gonzalez initially caught Guardiola's attention during the season's middle period. Following that Newcastle fixture, he started nine matches from 12 available, missing only two FA Cup ties and the Manchester derby.
His final start came in the victory at Everton. From there, he watched seven consecutive matches from the bench as City hit their stride in the campaign's closing stages. The Club World Cup continued this trend - one start from four games, coming against the tournament's weakest opposition.
Guardiola's calls for squad reduction, combined with increased competition following summer recruitment, have naturally raised questions about several players' futures. Gonzalez finds himself among those whose situations remain fluid.
City's approach remains consistent - the right offer for any player will always receive consideration. Gonzalez's case proves no different to this policy.
