McAtee Stars as England Edge Germany in U21 Final

James McAtee skippered England Under-21s to their second straight European title after a hard-fought 3–2 win over Germany in Bratislava.

James McAtee captained England Under-21s to their second straight European title after a hard-fought 3–2 win over Germany in Bratislava.

The City midfielder, named player of the match, set up two first-half goals before making way ahead of extra time. His sharpness in possession and movement off the ball stood out throughout.

England struck early. Inside five minutes, McAtee reacted quickest to a loose ball in the box, slipping it to Harvey Elliott, who finished low into the far corner.

Germany responded with a spell of pressure, but it was England who threatened next. Elliott broke with purpose and fed McAtee on the left. His cross skipped past Jay Stansfield, who had held his run.

The second goal wasn’t long coming. McAtee drove through midfield, held off his marker, and found Omari Hutchinson, who lashed home. A slick move, well finished.

Just before the break, Germany halved the deficit. Nelson Weiper rose highest to nod in a deep cross, giving England something to think about at half-time.

After the restart, Germany levelled. Paul Nebel picked up the ball after a corner wasn’t cleared and bent a fine shot into the top corner.

McAtee tried to restore the lead himself, drifting in from the right before curling narrowly over. The game was open. Neither side backed off.

Nebel then rattled the crossbar as the clock ticked down. England rode their luck. Full-time came with the score still even.

Two minutes into extra time, substitute Jonathan Rowe reacted sharply to a cross and stooped to head in from close range to give England what proved to be the winner.

Germany pushed again. In stoppage time at the end of extra time, Merlin Röhl cracked the bar with a fierce strike. England held on.

It was a night where fine margins mattered. McAtee’s composure and timing proved crucial, and England’s title defence was just about deserved.
