James McAtee says the potential presence of Thomas Tuchel at Saturday’s Under-21 European Championship final will sharpen England’s focus as they face Germany.
The midfielder, who captains the Young Lions, believes Tuchel’s watchful eye adds incentive. “If he turns up, that’s even more reason to win,” McAtee said. “It’s a chance to show what we’re about.”
England edged past the Netherlands in the semi-finals and now head into the final in Bratislava with the chance to retain their title. Germany, who swept aside France with a 3–0 win, offer the toughest test yet.
Tuchel, currently in the US monitoring players involved in the Club World Cup, is expected to travel. His attendance won’t go unnoticed, particularly by those chasing senior call-ups.
For McAtee – a product of Manchester City’s academy and one of several young players pushing for international recognition – it is a high-stakes occasion.
Under-21 boss Lee Carsley says Tuchel has maintained a close interest in the squad despite his distance. If the Germany head coach does take his seat in Bratislava, the message is clear: impress him – or miss your chance.
